As many as 15 students of a private educational institution suffered minor injuries when the school bus in which they were travelling hit a road roller on the city outskirts on Friday. The condition of one student is critical.

Students, studying nursery and primary classes, suffered injuries on the head, hands and legs in the mishap.

According to the locals, the accident occurred when the bus hit a road roller near Ganguru village, while taking the children to Edupugallu village around 8.15 a.m. Bus driver, students’ care-taker and teachers too suffered injuries in the accident.

They were rushed to a private hospital where they were treated as outpatients. Doctors said that around 20 children were brought to the hospital and their condition is out of danger.

When contacted, the school management said the accident occurred due to thick smoke. A few students suffered critical injuries. Students from nursery to 10{+t}{+h}classes are travelling in the ill-fated bus. The vehicle was badly damaged in the mishap, they said.

On receiving information, parents rushed to the hospital and took their children home after the treatment. They alleged that the accident occurred due to the negligence of the bus driver.

“We have not seen smoke or fog in the locality where the accident occurred. The mishap took place around 8 a.m. and the road was very clear by that time. The accident occurred due to some medical problem or negligence of the bus driver,” a parent who visited the spot alleged. The Education Department officials inquired about the accident and directed the school management to submit the details.

The Transport Department is verifying about the fitness of the vehicle, driver and whether the management is following the rules prescribed for an educational institution vehicle.
